Description
Black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae are among nature’s most efficient bioconverters and upcoming protein sources, and what they leave behind is extraordinary. Have look at the video below to understand the potential of BSF frass!
BSF frass is a double-hit amendment: rich in nitrogen and phosphorus like any good compost, but uniquely loaded with chitin – the structural compound found in insect exoskeletons. When chitin hits your soil, beneficial microbes get to work breaking it down, triggering a plant immune response in the process. Your plants essentially mistake it for incoming pest activity and prime their defences. The result is stronger, more resilient growth, and improved suppression of soil-borne pathogens and nematodes.
How to use:
- Incorporate into potting mix or raised bed soil at roughly 100–200g per 10L of growing medium
- Top-dress around established plants and water in (1kg per 20m ²)
- If you are still a lawn person, top dress there too!
- Add to your compost pile to supercharge microbial activity
- Mix into transplant holes for a strong establishment boost
