Description
How it works
The stirrup hoe, also known as the oscillating hoe, scuffle hoe, skoffel hoe or ‘hula ho weeder’, makes quick work of weeding, operating just below the surface of the soil to sever weeds at the root or pull out small weeds that don’t offer resistance to the blade.
Conventional wisdom dictates that cutting weeds without removing the roots will just allow them to grow back. While there is some truth to that statement, the traditional method of pulling weeds out “roots and all” disturbs soil structure and also brings more weed seeds to the surface where they can germinate. On the contrary, leaving roots in the ground feeds the soil as they break down, and with the ease and efficiency of the stirrup hoe, returning to deal with the odd resprouted weed is no big issue.
How to use
Stand upright and hold the handle in both hands as you would a broom, and maintain slight downward pressure while pushing back and forth. As you push the handle forwards and backwards with small motions, the flexible stainless steel blade pivots slightly with every stroke, making it highly effective at cutting weeds with both the push and pull motions, reducing your workload and saving your back.
Beware of too much downward pressure as you don’t want to disturb the soil too much, rather the aim is to cut the weeds just below the surface in the top inch or so.
Be careful of irrigation lines as a sharp blade can cut them
Lastly, be careful of feet and fingers!
Maintenance
Sharpen before use with a file, filing at an angle with strong pressure in one direction away from the blade in order to produce a raspy, serrated edge.
Always clean the blade of excess soil after use, and check nuts and bolts after a time for tightness
The handle will darken in colour as the wood ages, and can be treated occasionally with linseed oil or ProNature natural wood sealant.
Specifications
The steel head is made from profile cut and MIG-welded 3mm steel plate and 2mm steel pipe, powder coated with an anti-corrosion e-coat followed by the durable outer layer. The oscillating mechanism works by way of two bolts fitted with nylock nuts to allow for range of motion without coming loose. Onto the head is attached a 1mm stainless steel blade 12 cm wide, with both edges sharpened to allow for cutting on the forward and backward motion (these will last, but eventually wear out. Replacement blades are available).
The 160cm handle, made from locally grown FSC-certified eucalyptus saligna wood, is both eco-friendly and durable. Finished with Pronature’s eco-friendly linseed-based sealant, it offers an ergonomic grip and lightweight strength, helping you maintain a natural posture during use.
Ergonomics
This hoe is not just great for weeding; it’s easy on your body too. The lightweight design means less strain on your arms, shoulders, and back. Its long handle allows you to maintain an upright posture, reducing fatigue and making it perfect for extended garden sessions.
