Description
Disclaimer: The Aerobin is not manufactured locally in South Africa, but is imported from India. While our online store exists to promote locally made goods, we do make exceptions for products that we consider to be particularly impactful or effective at solving critical issues, such as food waste. You could also consider one of our other locally made compost bin options here.
Key Features
Aeration Lung – The Aerobin Composter includes a patented Lung® or aeration core in the centre of the bin, designed to keep oxygen flowing through the material. This encourages aerobic decomposition, which works faster and more efficiently than traditional composting.
Insulated Walls – The bin is built with double-layer insulation that traps heat inside. This higher internal temperature supports the composting process year-round, even in cooler weather.
Leachate Tank – A built-in tank at the base collects nutrient-rich liquid that drains from the compost. This leachate can be diluted and used as a liquid fertiliser for your plants.
Large Capacity – With a total volume of 400 litres, the Aerobin can process a large quantity of organic waste, meaning you won’t have to empty it as often.
Easy to Use – Features a hinged lid at the top for adding kitchen or garden waste, and an access door at the bottom for easy removal of finished compost.
Environmentally Friendly – Constructed from 100% recyclable materials, making it a sustainable option for eco-conscious households.
Odour Reduction – The aeration core and insulated design help minimise odours commonly associated with composting, keeping the process clean and pleasant.
How to compost with the Aerobin
Composting with the Aerobin is more like a stir fry than a lasagne. It is important to mix your greens and browns really well before adding it into the top of the bin. Use the Compost Trouble-Shooting guideline below to ensure you are getting the perfect recipe of greens and browns for your compost stir fry. (very important to get the mixing of materials across to your customers)
Composting Signs & Troubleshooting
Heat Test:
- Steam should be rising from the top when the lid is opened. This will happen 2-4 days after material has been added and should last for about two weeks.
- If not, then have a look at the moisture levels and smell.
Moisture Levels & Smell:
- If the material is looking soggy and wet and smells, then it’s time to get dirty. You will need to mix in more browns (sawdust, dried leaves etc.). If it is only a small layer you can mix browns into the top. If it is a lot of material then it is recommended to take everything out of the bin and mix in more browns.
- If the material is looking dry and has minimal smell, then you will need to do as stated above, however using more green/organic waste.
- To test if the levels are perfect. After two weeks of composting, you can grab a handful of composted material and squeeze it. The material should hold together (like clay) and only release a small amount of water. It should also smell sweet and earthy.
Compost Timeline: Once you have added your mixed materials, the Aerobin composts this within 8-12 weeks. However, you can also let the bin mature for several more months after this and it will only get better and better.
Harvesting: The harvest doors are located at the bottom. To open them, it is a simple push up on the handle and pull the door open. Harvest carefully to avoid damaging the aeration lung – there are two doors to make this easier.
Do’s & Don’ts:
- Do Not add meats, dairy products and large amounts of cooked/oily foods. Unless you are completely fermenting this with Bokashi method first, then it can be added.
- Do Not add animal/human faeces or any synthetic, plastic products.
- Do give yourself time to get the hang of composting with the Aerobin. It does take time to learn, however once you’ve got it, you’ll always have it. Find more tips on Instagram here
- Do have fun when composting, it is an addictive feeling watching the compost mature and ultimately using your homegrown waste in your own garden.
